Transient Pupils

Pupil mobility continues to be a major factor in the College. In June 2009 17% of pupils in the College were transient.

Three members of staff work with Transient Pupils across both college sites. Academic support is concentrated on Year 10 & 11 pupils, with the intention of boosting their success at GCSE examinations. The Transient Mentors (Mrs Rosie Cirin & Miss Natalie Smith) and I work with students throughout their school life to ensure that they have settled in to college.

This year the results for Transient Pupils at Key Stage 4 continued to have a negative effect on the College, however, in many areas the gap between College achievements and Transient achievements is continuing to close. This year our pupils had a positive effect on the results for +2 A*-C including Science, nearly 60% of those who achieved this were Transient. The support provided has also enabled all of our students who have English as an additional language to achieve at least 4 A* - C.

2008/09 saw 34% of Transient Pupils achieved 5 or more A* - C and 41% gain a Level 2 in both English and Maths. This year also saw an improvement in the achievement of Transient boys, 43% achieve 5A* - C and 51% gained a Level 2 in both English and Maths. This year the CVA of Transient Pupils was 1010 in comparison to 1007.9 for the whole school, indicating that progress is being made towards improving their attainment.

This year many of our students at Key Stage 3 have settled in well and are succeeding in school. At the 2008/09 Celebration Evenings, Transient Pupils were well represented. This was particularly evident in Year 8 where 6 of the 8 Transient Pupils who received awards for effort and achievement had been in school for less than a year.

With the ongoing support of Transient Pupils, we aim to build on this success in the new academic year.
