Specialist Sports status involves a clear expectation that the curriculum centre of excellence will drive whole school improvement. Its role is to spread best practice and raise standards, delivering the National strategy through links with PE, School Sport and Clubs.
Specialist Status will aim to:
- Raise attainment for all students both in Physical Education, ICT and across the whole curriculum;
- Strengthen and develop the quality of teaching and learning strategies in Physical Education and use them to help raise standards throughout the school;
- Extend opportunities for vocational learning and enrichment activity through Physical Education and Sport using links with sponsors, business, employers, further and higher education institutions and organisations related to the specialism;
- Develop within the school, characteristics which signal its specialist ethos and identity, reflected in the school’s aims and objectives – encouragement of increased take-up and interest in Physical Education and Sport;
- Strengthen collaboration with partner schools, primary and secondary, to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in Physical Education by sharing specialist facilities and resources, enhancing further the quality of teaching and developing and disseminating good practice.
- Specialist Status will also see impact at regional and national levels working with a variety of groups and bodies eg The Youth Sports Trusts, The FA and the Local Delivery Agency.
Effective working with the community:
Paignton Community and Sports College is the hub site for the Torbay School Sport Partnership. Families of schools which work together to increase sports and physical activity opportunities for all. The Torbay Sports Partnership has a Partnership Development Manager, based at Paignton Community and Sports College, with eight School Sport Co-ordinators based in each of the Torbay secondary schools and a Community Sports co-ordinator who is responsible for supporting sports clubs and helping to establish effective school to club links.
The Torbay Sports Partnership continues to provide opportunities to increase participation in sport and physical activity within school time and out of school hours for all Torbay schools. The Partnership is keen to establish effective school/club links and promote community sports volunteering. Sports opportunities will be provided for all young people in Torbay, including those with disabilities, special educational needs, those from disadvantaged backgrounds and ethnic minorities.
