Welcome to the 6th Form

Paignton Community & Sports College is proud of its reputation of excellence in the local and wider community. We welcome applications from students from other schools and the local community as well as current College pupils. At the College, we aim to provide each student with the best possible Post 16 education in ‘state of the art accommodation.

The College offers a wide range of courses including ‘A’ levels, Applied ‘A’ levels, Certificate and Diploma in Childcare & Education, 1st National Diploma in Sport and many other BTEC 1st Diplomas. Alongside this we offer a high level of pastoral and academic guidance and support as well as many sporting and social activities. Each student will also receive regular academic tutoring alongside a successful careers guidance programme. We hope that you will find the following information useful and we look forward to receiving your application.

E-Hairdressing Course

New Hairdressing Course comes to the 6th Form

Hairdressing your desire?  Want to learn with one of the best hairdressing trainers in the country?  Then we have got the course for you!

Richard Cherry, who has not only cut the hair of celebrities, but who has also trained the star hairdressers, including those found on celebrity scissor hands, has been secured by the College to run a level 2 certificate (equivalent to 4 GCSEs) in hairdressing.

The course is one year long and will allow you to move into a level 3 award (equivalent to A Levels) in the second year.

Course requirements:

Good attendance and behaviour in school is essential and a desire to become a hairdresser is a must!  You must be motivated and willing to put in the hard work as this is an intensive course that will lead to an ‘early achievement award’.

As this is such a great opportunity, candidates will be interviewed by Mr Thomas and Richard Cherry following a taster day that will be provided by e-hairdressing.

For further details, see Mr Thomas today ASAP as places are limited.

Interviews

The college offers all parents and pupils the opportunity for discussions during the formal application procedure in February and March. This allows an opportunity to discuss courses a pupil may wish to study and future career plans. Pupils should ensure they bring their most recent report with them to these interviews. On receipt of your completed application form you will be informed by post of your interview time and date.

One, Two or Three Years in the 6th Form

The 6th Form aims to meet the needs of all students and each student can negotiate to stay for as long as benefit is being gained from study. It is not at all unusual for students to stay for three years, particularly those students undertaking a BTEC 1st course and moving into a Two Year Advanced course, before going into Higher Education or employment.

6th Form and Beyond

Many of our students go on to university following their 6th form studies. Preparation for this occurs in our weekly careers sessions. In addition to university application help, the careers programme covers a variety of career/professional areas and helps with how to apply for jobs within these areas.

Accommodation and Student Facilities

Student life is centred around the new Business & technology Centre where there are computer suites, study, teaching and tutorial rooms adding to the stimulating learning environment. The Common Room is a spacious area where students can relax and meet friends.

Through the 6th Form Committee, students can take an active role in 6th Form life, including the organisation of 6th Form events and social activities. There are also opportunities for taking part in many other extra-curricular and enrichment activities.

Attendance Matters

We have a thorough system of attendance monitoring. The aim is to enable all students to reach their full potential and achieve success in the courses they have chosen to study.

Students are also issued, as part of their learning agreement, with a Post 16 Learning Contract. This is a contract between the College and the student setting out terms and conditions that should be adhered to. Our Government funding for your place in the 6th Form is based on attendance. You must be a full time student to receive a free place.

To qualify as a full time student, we have set the following guidelines:

  • 100% attendance in all your lessons (unless there is a good reason to miss them)
  • a minimum of 80% attendance to registration with your Tutor in Year 12
  • a minimum 60% attendance to registration with your Tutor in Year 13 and beyond

Any student who will be absent from College should contact the Attendance Officer before 9.30 am on 01803 393781. We expect all of our students to adhere to these figures, failure to do so may jeopardise your place at the College.

Education Maintenance Allowance

This is a weekly payment worth up to £30 for students who are aged 16 and planning to continue in further education. There are also bonuses of £100 if you remain on your course and make good progress. Payments are made direct to a bank account. Further information on student eligibility can be obtained on the information website www.dfes/gov.uk/ema or the student helpline 0808 1016219.

In addition students may qualify for assistance with transport. Further details can be obtained from the Transport Office, Oldway, by calling 01803 208242.

Student absences must be qualified with evidence if EMA is to be paid.
