“The course of true love never did run smooth”

Paignton Community and Sports College’s Theatre Company (PCSCTC) has taken on the challenge of being the school to represent Torbay in the Shakespeare Schools Festival, by performing an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Palace Theatre, Paignton.

PCSCTC have been rehearsing intensively throughout September and have also participated in a professional workshop alongside other Devon schools involved in the festival taking place on Thursday 9th October at 7pm.

Theatre Company members said:

“It’s a fantastic experience to work in a professional theatre”
“The Shakespeare Schools Festival helps me to get really enthusiastic about Shakespeare”
“It’s really cool to work with other people who love Drama too”

The festival is a national annual event, and not only is this the first time that PCSCTC has taken part, but they are also being supported by memorable Drama Department characters from the past, present and future, including three previous Heads of Drama and one previous Head of Creative & Expressive Arts from Paignton Community & Sports College.  The college’s participation has been coordinated by Advanced Skills Teacher Jess Hunter and directed by Jess alongside Drama Department stalwart Wendy Caplan.  Jil Farrant, a prominent figure for Creative & Expressive Arts at the College as well as theatre in the community will also be assisting the performance.

The play is a fun-filled romp with a wealth of comedic characters. In the magical forest dwell the cockney punk fairies, where the preppy lovers’ lives take a dream-like twist. The college’s nerdy computer club members are braving the stage with their most lamentable farce, whilst the chic members of the court look down their noses at the play within a play that is, “ten words long, but by ten words, it is too long.”

This is an exciting project that the Creative & Expressive Arts faculty are delighted to be involved in.

Tickets are available at the Palace Avenue Theatre box office on 01803 665800. (£6/£8)
