Principal’s Message

May I take the opportunity to welcome you and your son/daughter to Paignton Community and Sports College, an Outstanding School (Ofsted 2010).  The College is the largest of all the secondary schools in Torbay and is based on two sites, Waterleat Road and Borough Road, giving it a feel of two smaller schools. Staff and Governors in the College are totally focused on providing the very best outcomes for young people and work constantly to achieve this.  In addition to achieving the best possible academic outcomes, we are very clear that there is far more to a good education than academic achievement.  Above all we want our young people to enjoy their time in the College, to feel happy, to be healthy, to feel safe and to enjoy their learning. As well as gaining the best qualifications they can, we want them to develop into well rounded young people who can confidently take their place in the world.  The College was very proud indeed to be designated as an Outstanding School by Ofsted in May 2010, (Download Report HERE)the only non selective secondary school to ever hold that accolade in Torbay.  Particularly pleasing are the quotes from the inspection report which identifies our many strengths:

“The College provides the young people it serves with education of outstanding quality”

“Teaching is consistently good and a significant proportion is inspirational”

“Teachers have high expectations and excellent relationships with their students”

“Students behave well and show an excellent understanding of healthy living”

“The curriculum has been imaginatively adapted to offer all students opportunities to develop their skills and interests”

“The excellent governing body continually challenges the college to improve further, and meets its statutory responsibilities well”

Over the past 10 years there has been a continuous drive to improve the facilities in the College.

Waterleat Road Centre (Years 7, 8 and 9)

August 1999 saw the completion of a new Food and Textiles room on the Borough Road site.  An additional building was completed in January 2001 at the Waterleat Road site to provide a new Music, Dance and Drama facility.  A further £4.3 million building programme began in September 2002 providing extensive new buildings on both the Borough Road and Waterleat sites.  This phase of building was completed at Waterleat Road in October 2004 and includes a new library, classrooms and learning support facilities. In November 2009, the College opened a third generation astro pitch which was funded by the Football Foundation. In November 2010 a new sports hub opened providing a huge indoor area for Basketball, Netball, Badminton and Tennis.FACILITIES FOR HIRE - To download details of facilities for hire please

Borough Road Centre (Years 10, 11 and 6th Form)

In 1998 the College completed a £3.0 million building programme which provided ‘State of the Art’ accommodation and facilities at the Borough Road Centre for the then new Sixth Form. A further £4.3 million building programme began in September 2002 providing extensive new buildings on both the Borough Road and Waterleat sites. The first phase of the building finished in September 2003 and includes new Classrooms, Science laboratories, ICT facilities and Music and Drama facilities. A brand new Sports Hall and Fitness Suite was opened in July 2003.  In July 2007 the Borough Road site opened new classrooms, a Media Suite and a new TIC TAC Health Centre.  The Fitness Suite, which is open to the public, is also based at Borough Road.

Sixth Form

The College is very proud of its 6th Form which provides opportunities for students of all abilities and has a well deserved reputation for being very inclusive.  Our main criteria for entry into the 6th Form is one of students having the capacity to be successful whatever their success may look like for each individual student, be it top A level grades or a pass on a vocational course.

Ofsted recognised the quality of our 6th form:

“All teaching observed in the 6th form was at least good and was characterised by high expectations and excellent relationships”

The Specialist Sports College

The Sports College is a real strength of the College, offering our young people a wealth of opportunities.

The specialism impacts across all aspects of college life from health leadership opportunities and innovation in teaching and learning.

As a Sports College we recognise that not all young people like traditional sport so in addition to offering all the traditional sporting activities we offer the opportunity to enjoy such activities as rowing, cheerleading, sailing and many more.

We look forward to welcoming you and your son or daughter into this dynamic and vibrant College.
