‘The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’
Staff and sixth form students joined in with generous donations and contributions to help raise £107.27 towards Macmillan Cancer Support at ‘The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’.
The event was held in Borough Road Centre library on Friday 25th September and much enjoyed by everybody who attended.
The year 10 and 11 students helped boost proceeds in their lunch break when we held a cake sale. It was well supported.
A Literary Celebration
Paignton Community & Sports College libraries were proud to host a Carnegie Shadowing Day event on Thursday 25th June, supported by our colleagues from Devon School Library Services. We welcomed 8 local secondary schools, from as far apart as Dartmouth Community College to Dawlish Community College, over 100 students and teachers attended.
Each school gave a 10 minute presentation of one of the shortlisted books that they have been reading for the Carnegie Book Award. Afterwards we voted to select who we think should collect the award (based on the presentations).

Paignton Community & Sports College – the year 8 and 9 presentation of ‘Cosmic’
We had a visit from Lesley Howarth a West Country author; many of whose books have previously been shortlisted or highly commended in the past. She was charming and spoke at length about her experiences as an author and her latest release ‘Bodyswap’ before throwing the floor open to ‘any questions’.

Lesley Howarth inspiring the audience
It was a huge success and greatly enjoyed by all who attended. It was good to see so many of our young people enjoying such a prestigious event and supporting a good old fashioned read!!

Libraries at Borough Road and Waterleat Road
We are immensely proud of the libraries on each
site of the College, and feel that the students are fortunate to have such good
facilities to assist them.
They offer vast learning resources that support
all members of the school in every aspect of the curriculum. They become an
integral part of our students’ lives in their journey through the College.
We encourage independent research skills but will
always offer guidance and support if required. Sixth former’s use the libraries
on each site for their private study and make full use of our resources.
Both libraries are fully equipped with PC’s for
students use and have a teaching area. Several activities may be occurring at
any time which creates a busy, thriving atmosphere.
We don’t insist on silence, just that we respect
each other’s right to a quiet area in which to work or read.
Many events take place in both libraries such as
local fund raising, displays of students work, book promotions and careers
presentations. They add to the pastoral support we provide, and help us to stay at the heart of the college
Of course we offer the more traditional role of books (around 12000 in total between sites). You still can’t beat a good read.
Carnegie Shadowing In June 2007 a group of students from year 7, 8, 9 and 10 joined with other
students from schools around the area at Oldway Mansions for a Carnegie Award
Shadowing day.
They met together to give a 10 minute presentation of the book they had been give to champion from the short-list for the Carnegie Award.
We then cast a vote for the book we thought
should take the award.
There was a presentation from
poet Brian Patten. He
took many questions from students after his talk and who knows what hidden
talents he might have inspired!
It
was a fantastic day put together by Devon School Library Services for the 5th year and certainly an event we shall be taking part in again.
The Key Stage 3 library at Waterleat
Road Centre
Officially
opened in February 2005 by the author Michael Morpurgo, the current Children's Laureate at the time.
We open to students term-time only from 8am - 4pm
The Libraries are well used for research, homework, PC’s and sometimes just a quiet read.
The Key Stage 4/5 library at Borough Road Centre.
This library was established approximately 12 years ago and provides facilities and resources for year 10 and 11 students and our 6th form. It opens from daily, term-time only and is used for research, homework/coursework, PC’s, or just a quiet read. Again, we don't insist on silence as in the more traditional public libraries just that we respect other users's right to a quiet area to study and read in.
