VISIT TO LAGOS, NIGERIA
During March, Mr Trevarthen and Mrs Thomas visited Sanya Secondary School for a week in Lagos, Nigeria.
It was with great pleasure we met our Nigerian friends who visited us at Paignton last September.
The visit was funded by the British Council and was part of the Dreams and Teams Project, only available to Specialist Sports Colleges. The programme aims to develop mutual understanding between our two countries. It also aims to develop leadership skills and cross cultural awareness in 14-18 year olds through sport and international educational links.
Lagos is a major city in Nigeria and the school was in the centre of this busy and noisy part of West Africa. Where we stayed and travelled was densely populated. We met all sorts of people who without fail all offered us a genuine warm welcome to their city and country and thanked us for working in Sanya Secondary.
The students were a delight to work with; we finished the week with them leading a session with the local primary school culminating in a World Cup football Tournament in which England was the winning side! We had to be very creative in improvising with resources but were impressed with the responsible approach and sports leadership skills the Dreams and Teams students developed. A web camera link with Paignton was planned in order to allow our students to liaise on a regular basis.
The next phase of the link will be to welcome four of the students from Sanya, subject to our governors approval, to spend a week here working alongside our own ?Dreams and Teams? students. We look forward to it!
