We were chosen to represent our school in a Torbay Business Enterprise competition held at South Devon College against all the other secondary schools and colleges in the Bay.

The challenge was to create a radio advert to suit the needs of a business partner who we had to recruit. The first thing was to meet our business partner, Peter Hunt from Ponticello. There was a meeting held on the 17th of November with our business partner to discuss the plans of action to create a radio advertisement and a presentation for the judges. The presentation had to be five minutes long and consist of a business plan, and the radio advertisement had to be presentable on Palm FM.
We were each set individual tasks such as writing the radio advert, organising the presentation, and helping edit the radio advert. To be one step ahead of the other groups, we assigned someone to write the advert beforehand. This allowed us to get straight into recording on the day.
Our radio advert was to advertise the business ‘Ponticello’ which is an IT solutions business that focuses on small local businesses and their IT problems. However the business was now interested in helping personal IT problems. The radio advert consisted of a small play that showed a family having computer problems, which were sorted out by ‘Ponticello’. Our aim was to show that the business helped IT problems and to advertise the number of the business; which we thought we achieved.
When at South Devon College, we were assigned a 45 minute slot to record and edit our final advert. However we went slightly over the time. First of all we recorded all the lines, and then two of the team stayed and put it together with sound effects with the help of two A-Level music students from the College.
After we had completed recording our radio advert we focused on our presentation. When our presentation was finished we practised our lines to make sure that the presentation would be presented as well as it could have been, including working through Lunch.
In the afternoon all the school’s went through their presentation’s in front of three judges and all the other teams. As well as the presentation, the radio adverts were played to the judges, one of whom is a Director of PALM FM. When the presentations had been completed the Judges left the Hall to make their decision. After a few minutes the judges returned to pronounce Paignton College the winners of the Radio advertisement and to present Paignton students with the winners cup and the chance to go to Palm Radio and have our advert broadcast on air.
